Indian students discover multifaceted image of Russian winter during TV BRICS teleconference

An international teleconference entitled “Russian Winter in Literary Texts” took place in Moscow at the All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature named after M. I. Rudomino. Students from New Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, and Kolhapur, as well as universities in Gujarat, West Bengal, Kerala, and other regions of India, joined the video meeting organised by the TV BRICS International Media Network. More than 120 students expressed a desire to read poems and perform songs revealing the theme of winter in Russian culture.

The teleconference was hosted by Tamara Skok, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Director of the Department of Innovative Linguistic Projects at TV BRICS and Project Leader of "Modern Russian", and Evgeny Mishin, Head of Cooperation with South Asia and the Middle East at the network. A presentation about winter in Russia, carols, and Christmas and Yuletide traditions was accompanied by excerpts from the film "Anna Karenina", directed by Aleksander Zarkhi, and the screen adaptation of "The Blizzard", directed by Vladimir Basov.

Professor and General Secretary of the Indian Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (INDAPRYAL) Meenu Bhatnagar highly praised the results of the meeting. According to her, the interactive format and rich content of the teleconference made a strong impression on participants.
"An interactive lecture with an audiovisual component was simply wonderful and invaluable. The material was presented in an incredibly engaging and accessible way. [...] The format of the lecture encouraged active student participation, and they enthusiastically prepared poems and songs about winter. We have received positive feedback from the participants, and they are already looking forward to the next event of this kind. With each teleconference organised jointly with TV BRICS and the Russian House, the number of participants steadily grows, demonstrating the increasing interest and the benefits it brings to students"

In turn, Tamara Skok explained why the organisers chose the theme of winter. She emphasised that the image of winter in Russian literature is far from unambiguous, which makes it particularly interesting for study.
"Today our meeting is dedicated to the ambivalent and multifaceted image of the ‘Russian winter’ in literary texts. We examined how this image varies across different works, in prose and poetry; what aspects authors focus on; and how both the beauty and the treachery of winter are revealed. [...] Such meetings provide a powerful emotional impulse and encourage students to study the Russian language at a different level in order to perceive original texts and screen adaptations without a language barrier"

The video meeting was organised by the “Modern Russian” project of the TV BRICS International Media Network together with the Indian Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (INDAPRYAL) and the Russian House in New Delhi.

The teleconference on Russian winter traditions became the ninth in a series of international educational video meetings organised by TV BRICS.

The international information and educational project “Modern Russian” was launched in 2007 with the aim of promoting the Russian language, improving literacy levels and providing linguistic support. It is implemented by the TV BRICS International Media Network. In terms of its range of practical philology activities, the project has no equivalent in Russia or abroad. Its information resources and advisory services are used in more than 150 countries worldwide.
